Day-by-Day Itinerary

  01

  Day 01: Arrival & Primary Forest Walk

  Your expedition begins when you arrive in Puerto Maldonado to board an outboard boat along the Madre de Dios River to Ecolucerna Lodge (approximately 1½ hours downriver). Upon arrival, you will enjoy a tasty lunch made from organic ingredients and native flavors. After lunch, you will walk along the natural trails, discovering primary and secondary forest, its components, uses, man-made transformations, and its global relevance. As night falls, you will have the opportunity to observe the fascinating behavior of nocturnal Amazon flora and fauna. Back at the Lodge, a restorative traditional dinner awaits. Meals: Lunch and Dinner.

  02

  Day 02: Sandoval Lake & Night Caiman Safari

  After a nutritious breakfast, you will set off for a walk through the Tambopata National Reserve, leading you to the magnificent Sandoval Lake — a true showcase of why Madre de Dios is known as the biodiversity capital of Peru. You will learn about the Reserve's conservation work and the lake's formation while sailing in a canoe through its waters, home to the endangered giant otter, the blue-and-yellow macaw, and the legendary "Paiche", one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. At night, you will embark on an exciting caiman safari, gliding along the Madre de Dios River to observe the ecosystem, Amazonian ravines, and the behavior of nocturnal riverside fauna. The day closes with a traditional dinner in the lodge's dining room. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  03

  Day 03: Canopy Tower Adventure & Artisanal Fishing

  The morning begins with an adventure in the canopy — bridges built 15 meters above the ground, right in the treetops, offering a privileged view of the Amazon rainforest. From these heights you will have the opportunity to spot birds and, with luck, mammals moving through the forest canopy. The route also passes by the wildlife rescue center, a foundation with which ECOLUCERNA collaborates actively every day in the effort to preserve the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Learn about exotic species and their fascinating stories. After returning to the Lodge for lunch, the afternoon immerses you in the culture of the Peruvian Amazon through an artisanal fishing experience. Guided by our experts, you will try your luck with handcrafted equipment in the rivers and streams of the Bajo Madre de Dios — and maybe bring dinner home. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  04

  Day 04: Tambopata River Expedition & Observation Tower

  After an early breakfast, we begin the journey from the lower Madre de Dios River to the Tambopata River area in the upper section of the Tambopata National Reserve. A combined boat and car trip takes us to the impressive Chunchos clay lick zone — an area of unparalleled biological wealth within the reserve. After lunch, we enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from the strategically positioned observation tower, allowing us to contemplate the immensity of the jungle and spot additional fauna and flora. Hiking activities in the afternoon offer further insight into the conservation work and wildlife recorded in this remote area. You will spend the night in a shelter near the clay lick, ready for an early start the following morning. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

  05

  Day 05: Chunchos Clay Lick & Return to the City

  We start the day early at 5:30am, positioning ourselves in front of the Collpa Chunchos clay deposit — an emblematic spot where parrots, macaws, and other bird species congregate in search of mineral-rich clay. A picnic-style breakfast accompanies this unique natural spectacle: a rare, close-up observation of these vibrant birds in their natural habitat, surrounded by the sounds and colors of the jungle. This fascinating behavior is a direct connection to the unique biodiversity of the Tambopata region. After enjoying this experience, we return downriver to the lodge for check-out. You will have time to organize your belongings before the transfer back to Puerto Maldonado, arriving between 15:00 and 15:30 hours. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.
